Gary Klopfenstein Mesirow’s senior managing director of currency management, plans to leave the Chicago-based company in late July and set up his own small boutique to manage currency assets and other alternative investments, which typically means hedge fund or private-equity assets.Mr. Klopfenstein, 52, joined Mesirow when the firm bought his $1.5 billion asset management business in 2004. Since then he has cultivated new clients, including international investors, such as those in Abu Dhabi, to expand the currency and commodity business to $55 billion in assets under management.His risk management work, in which currency and commodity assets are bought and sold to protect and bolster clients’ finances, accounted for about two-thirds of Mesirow’s $77 billion in assets under management last year.
