Island Pops was started in 2015 by married couple, Khalid Hamid and Shelly Marshall. Like most businesses, the company was formed out of necessity. In 2014, Shelly returned from vacationing in Trinidad, sick with Chikungunya and laid up in bed craving homemade soursop ice cream. Khalid searched Brooklyn for a homemade taste of the flavor and came up empty-handed. Wanting to please his wife, he tried to make the ice cream himself. It wasn’t perfect by any means, but it was at that moment the couple realized that there was a gap in the market for traditionally made homemade Caribbean ice cream and decided to do something about it.
One year later, after attending Penn State’s prestigious ice cream short course and many months of testing flavors and recipes, Island Pops was born. After winning 1st place at the 2015 Brooklyn Public Library’s PowerUp Competition, the couple took the Caribbean community by storm with their premium ice cream and ice pops. They worked to develop the brand, selling in street fairs, food markets and public and private catered events. Fast forward, three years later, Island Pops opened its first flag ship store in Crown Heights Brooklyn in July 2018.
